Siraj-ud-Dowla was the last Nawab of Bangla. He was a true patriot. He fought to defend the country from the East India Company. Unfortunately, his Commander-in-Chief, Mirjatar took the side of the English. As a result, Bangla lost her independence

০২. ক্লাসে যেতে সুস্মিতার দেরী হলো। প্রফেসর আহমেদ তার উপর ভয়ানক রেগে গেলেন। কিছুক্ষণ তিনি নির্বাক দাঁড়িয়ে থাকলেন। তারপর তিনি তাকে তিরস্কার করলেন। সুস্মিতা লজ্জা পেলেন।

Sushmita was late for her class. Professor Ahmed became very angry with her. He stood speechless (নির্বাক) for a while, Then he rebuked her. Sushmita was very ashamed of it.

০৩. জাহান ও টুটুল দুই ভাই। দু'জনাই গত দশ বছর ঢাকায় বাস করছে। জাহান ঢালায় একটি বিদেশী ফার্মে চাকরী করে। কিন্তু ছোট ভাই টুটুল লেখাপড়াও করে না চাদরীও করেনা। সে শুধু খেলাধুলা নিয়েই ব্যস্ত থাকে। তাই জাহানকে অনেক কষ্টে সংসার চালাতে হয়। তবুও সে টুটুলের উপর রাগ করে না।

Jahan and Tutul are two brothers. Both of them have been living in Dhaka for the last ten years. Jahan works in a foreign farm in Dhaka. But his younger brother Tutul neither reads nor works. He is only busy with games and sports. So, Jahan has to maintain the family with much hardship. Yet he does not become angry with Tutui.

০৪. বন্যা একটি প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগ। বাংলাদেশ প্রতি বছর এই বন্যার কবলে পড়ে। বন্যার সময় মানুষ ও অন্যান্য প্রাণি অবর্ণনীয় দুঃখ-কষ্ট ভোগ করে। ফসলেরও ব্যাপক ক্ষতি হয়। বন্যার পর উদরাময় ও কলেরার ন্যায় নানা প্রকার রোগ মহামারী আকারে দেখা দেয়। কাজেই বন্যা আমাদের দেশের পক্ষে একটি মারাত্মক সমস্যা। সরকার এই সমস্যা সমাধানের চেষ্টা করছে।

Flood is a natural calamity. Every year Bangladesh becomes a victim to this flood. During flood men and other animals suffer untold miseries. Crops are greatly damaged. After flood many diseases like diarrhoea and cholera break out in an epidemic form. So, flood is a serious problem for our country. The Government is trying to solve this problem.

০৫. আমার দাদা একজন খুব গরীব কৃষক ছিলেন। কিন্তু তিনি খুব সৎ এবং পরিশ্রমী ছিলেন। দাদার সততার জন্য গ্রামের সকলেই তাকে খুব ভালবাসতো। পরিশ্রম করে তিনি অনেক সম্পত্তি করেন তিনি মাঠেও প্রচুর ফসল ফলাতেন। ফসল থেকে তার প্রচুর রোজগার হোত । এভাবে তিনি তার অবস্থার পরিবর্তন করেন।

My grandfather was a very poor farmer. But he was very honest and industriuos. Everybody in the village loved him very much for his honesty. He earned a lot of property by means of industry. He also produced much crops in the field. He earned a lot of money from the crops. Thus he changed his condition.

০৬. আমরা বিজ্ঞানের যুগে বাস করি। সর্বক্ষেত্রে আমরা বিজ্ঞানের প্রভাব দেখতে পাই। বিজ্ঞান আমাদের দৈনন্দিন জীবনের নিত্যসঙ্গী। বিজ্ঞানের সাহায্যে আমরা অসম্ভবকে সম্ভব করেছি। বর্তমান সভ্যতা বিজ্ঞানের অবদান। বিজ্ঞানের সাহায্যে দারিদ্র ও ব্যাধিকে জয় করতে হবে। মানবতার বৃহত্তর কল্যাণে বিজ্ঞানকে নিয়োজিত করতে হবে।

We live in an age of science. We see the influence of science everywhere. Science is a constant company in our daily life. We have made the impossible possible with the help of science. The present civilization is a contribution of science. We have to conquer poverty and disease with the help of science. Science has to be utilized for the greater welfare of mankind.

০৭. একদিন সন্ধ্যায় আমি নদীর ধারে একা হাঁটছিলাম। হঠাৎ দেখি আমার ছোট বোন সুমী আমার দিকে ছুটে আসছে। সুমীর বয়স মাত্র ছয় বছর। আমার কাছে পৌঁছেই সে কেঁদে ফেললো। বললো, “আমি সূর্য অস্ত যাওয়া দেখবো।”

One evening was walking alone by the side of a river. Suddenly I saw my younger sister Sumi running towards me. Sumi was only six. As soon as she came to me, she burst into tears. She said, "I shall enjoy the sun set.

০৮. বাংলাদেশ আমাদের জন্মভূমি। আমরা ভালবাসি এদেশের নীল আকাশ, সবুজ মাঠ, নদীর কুলকুল ধ্বনি-আর সরল মানুষ। যে দেশকে ভালবাসে সে দেশপ্রেমিক। একজন যথার্থ দেশপ্রেমিক নিজের জীবনের চেয়ে নিজের দেশকে বেশি ভালবাসে। জন্মভূমির মঙ্গল ও উন্নতির জন্য চেষ্টা করা আমাদের পবিত্র দায়িত্ব।

Bangladesh is our birthland. We love the blue sky, the green fields, the murmuring sound and the simple peuple of this country. He who loves the country is a patriot. A true patriot loves his country more than his own life. It our sacred duty to try for the welfare and prosperity for the motherland.

০৯. গ্রামটির পাশ দিয়ে একটি ছোট নদী প্রবাহমান। এ নদীতে গ্রামের লোকেরা গোছল করে ও সাঁতার কাটে। নদীতে প্রচুর মাছ আছে। গ্রামের লোকেরা এখানে মাছ ধরে। বর্ষায় নদীর দু'কুল প্লাবিত হয় বলে এখানে মাঠে অনেক ফসল ফলে !

A small river flows beside the village. The villagers bathe and swim in this river. The river abounds with fish. The villagers catch fish here. Since both the banks of the river are overflowed during the rainy season, a plenty of crops grow here.

১০. আমাদের দেশের শতকরা ৮৫ জন লোক গ্রামে বাস করে। তাহারা দরিদ্র ও অশিক্ষিত। তাহাদের অনেকেই ভূমিহীন কৃষক। তাহারা সারা বৎসর অন্যের জমি চাষ করে। ফসলের ভাগ খুব কম পায়।

 Eighty five percent of the people of our country live in the village. They are poor and illiterate. Many of them are landless farmers. They cultivate others' land round the year. They get a little share of the produced crops.

১১. তোমরা কি কখনও সুন্দর বনে গিয়াছ? সুন্দরবন দেশের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলে অবস্থিত। সেখানে আছে গভীর জঙ্গল। সেই জঙ্গলে বাস করে বাঘ ও হরিণ। সুন্দর বনের বাঘ পৃথিবী বিখ্যাত।

Have you ever been to the Sunderbans. It is to the south of the country. There are dense forests there. Tigers and deer live in those forests. The tigers of the Sunderbans are world famous.

১২. হিম দ্রুত ষ্টেশনের দিকে হাঁটতে লাগিল। কিন্তু সে ষ্টেশনে না পৌঁছিতেই পাড়ি ছাড়িয়া দিল। রহিম বিপদে পড়িল। সে এখন কেমন করিয়া বাড়ী যাইবে? রাত্র বেলা একা হাঁটিয়া যাওয়া সম্ভব নহে।

Rahim was walking fast to the station. But no sooner had he reached the station than the train left. Rahim was in trouble. How would he go home now? It is not possible to go on foot alone at night.

১৩. সরল স্বভাবের জন্য হযরত ওমর সুপ্রসিদ্ধ ছিলেন। তিনি নিজেকে কখনও মহৎ বা ধনী মনে করিতেন না। তিনি সকল সময় অতি সাধারণভাবে থাকিতেন। তিনি মোটা রুটি ও খেজুর খাইতেন। অনেক সময় বিদেশী লোকজন আসিয়া তাঁহাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করিত, “খলিফা কোথায়?

Hazrat Omar was well famous for his simple nature. He never thought himself great or rich. He always lived very simply. He ate coarse bread and date. Many times people from abroad came and asked him, "Where is the Caliph?"

১৪. চা একটি জনপ্রিয় পানীয়। আমরা ক্লান্তি দূর করিবার জন্য চা পান করি। কিন্তু অতিরিক্ত চা পান স্বাস্থ্যের জন্য ক্ষতিকর। বাংলাদেশে প্রচুর চা উৎপন্ন হয়। এই চা রপ্তানী করিয়া বাংলাদেশ অনেক বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জন করে।

Tea is a popular drink. We drink tea to remove tiredness. But over drinking of tea is harmful for health. Tea grows in plenty in Bangladesh. Bangladesh earns a lot of foreign exchange by exporting this tea.

১৫. আমরা বাংলাদেশ পাইয়াছি। বাংলাদেশের নীল আকাশ, শ্যামল-ক্ষেত্র, নির্মল বায়ু, সবই আমাদের কাছে প্রিয়। প্রত্যেক জাতির কাছে তাহার জন্মভুমি প্রিয়। বাংলাদেশও আমাদের কাছে অত্যন্ত প্রিয়। এই প্রিয় বাংলাদেশ গড়িয়া তুলিবার দায়িত্ব আমাদের ।

We have achieved Bangladesh. The blue sky, the green fields and the fresh air of Bangladesh all are dear to us. The mother land is dear to every nation. Bangladesh is also very dear to us. It is our duty to build up this dear Bangladesh.

১৬. যে দেশকে ভালবাসে সে দেশপ্রেমিক। দেশপ্রেমিকরা নিজের জীবনের চেয়ে নিজের দেশকে বেশী ভালবাসে। তাঁরা দেশের মঙ্গলের জন্য জীবন দিতেও প্রস্তুত। তাঁদেরকে সবাই সম্মান করে। মৃত্যুর পরও তারা বেঁচে থাকেন।

He who loves the country is a patriot. The patriots love the country more than their own lives. They are also ready to sacrifice their lives for the welfare of the country. All respect them. They live even after their death.

১৭. বহুলোক সময়ের মূল্য জানে না। তাহারা জানে না যে সময়ই জীবন। সুতরাং একটু সময়ও নষ্ট করা উচিত নয়। যে বালক সময়ের মূল্য বুঝে না সে জীবনে কৃতকার্য হইতে পারে না। আমাদের মনে রাখা উচিত যে কাল ও স্রোত কাহারও জন্য অপেক্ষা করে না।

Many people don't know the value of time. They do not know that time is life. So one should not waste a single moment. The boy who does not understand the value of time can not succeed in life. We should remember that time and tide wait for none.

১৮. আমরা স্বাধীন দেশের নাগরিক। স্বাধীনতা মানুষের জন্মগত অধিকার। কি বিনা চেষ্টায় কোন জাতি স্বাধীনতা পায় না। আবার তাহা রক্ষা করিতেও দেশবাসীকে দৃঢ় প্রতিজ্ঞ হইতে হয়। মাতৃভূমির স্বাধীনতা রক্ষা করা প্রত্যেক নাগরিকের পবিত্র কর্তব্য।

We are the citizens of an independent country. Freedom is the birth right of a man. But no nation can achieve it without efforts. Again the country men are to be determined to defend it. It is the sacred duty of each citizen to defend the independence of the motherland.

১৯. আমাদের গ্রামের নাম রসুলপুর গ্রামটি চিত্রা নদীর ধারে। গ্রামে প্রায় পাঁচ হাজার পরিবারের বাস। গ্রামবাসীরা নদীতে সাঁতার কাটে, নৌকা চালায়, মাছ ধরে। নদীর উভয় পাশের দৃশ্যাবলী চমৎকার।

The name of our village is Rasulpur. The village stands beside the Chitra. five thousand families live in the village. The villagers swim, row boats and catch fish here. The scenery of the both sides of the river is charming.

২০. আমাদের দেশের অধিকাংশ লোক নিরক্ষর। তারা পড়িতেও জানে না, লিখিতেও জানে না। অথচ লেখাপড়া না জানিলে মানুষ উন্নতি করিতে পারে না। আমাদের সরকার নিরক্ষরতা দূর করিতে চেষ্টা করিতেছেন। ইহা আমাদের জন্য অত্যন্ত আনন্দের সংবাদ ।

Most of the people of our country are illiterate. They neither know how to read nor how to write. But no man can prosper without education. Our government is trying to remove illiteracy. It is a very happy news for us.

২১. আমি ফুল খুব ভালবাসি। কিন্তু আমার বন্ধু সোহেল ফুল একদম পছন্দ করে না। ফুল ফুটে আবার শুকিয়ে মরে যায়। যা ক্ষণস্থায়ী তাকে তার পছন্দ নয়। কিন্তু সে ভুলে গিয়েছে যে, আমরা মানুষও চিরদিনের জন্য পৃথিবীতে আসিনি।

I love flowers very much. But my friend Sohel does not like flowers at all. Flowers bloom and dry to die. He does not like what is short-lived. But he has forgot that we, human beings donot come in the world for ever.

২২. ম্যালেরিয়া এখন একটা সাধারণ রোগ। অতীতে এটা ছিল কঠিন রোগ। ম্যালেরিয়ার কারণ তখন জানা ছিল না। স্যার রোনাল্ড রস ম্যালেরিয়ার কারণ আবিষ্কার করেন। তিনি প্রমাণ করেন যে, মশা ম্যালেরিয়া জীবাণু বহন করে ।

Now malaria is a simple disease. In the past it was a difficult disease. The cause of malaria was not known then. Sir Ronald Ross discovered the cause of malaria. He proved that mosquito carries the germs of malaria.

২৩. হযরত ওমর (রাঃ) ছিলেন আদর্শ মানুষ। তিনি অত্যন্ত গুণী লোক ছিলেন। জনগণের অবস্থা জানিবার জন্য তিনি প্রায়ই ছদ্মবেশে ঘুরিয়া বেড়াইতেন। একরাতে হঠাৎ তাঁহার কানে করুণ ধ্বনি আসিল। তাঁহার মনে হইল কে যেন কাঁদিতেছে ।

Hazrat Omar (R) was an ideal man. He was a man great qualities. He often walked about in disguise to know the condition of the people. Suddenly one night a pitious sound came to his ear. He thought that some one was crying.

২৪. দিল্লীর বাদশাহ নাসিরুদ্দীন গরীবের মত থাকিতেন। তাঁহার মনে কোন অহঙ্কার ছিল না। তিনি ছিলেন যেমন দয়ালু তেমনি বিনয়ী । শুধু নিজের জন্য তিনি মোটেই ভাবিতেন না। তিনি নিজের হাতে কোরান নকল করিতেন।

Nasiruddin, the emperor of Delhi lived like a poor. He had no pride. He was as kind as modest. He did not think for his ownself at all. He copied the Quran with his own hand.

২৫. খান জাহান আলী ছিলেন একজন বড় দরবেশ। তিনি ছিলেন মুকুটবিহীন সম্রাট'। তিনি জনগণকে ধর্ম শিক্ষা দিতেন। আবার তাদের ইহজগতের মঙ্গলের জন্যও সচেষ্ট ছিলেন। তিনি অনেক রাস্তাঘাট নির্মাণ ও দীঘি খনন করাইয়াছিলেন।

Khan Jahan Ali was a great saint. He was a monarch without a crown'. He taught people religion. Again he tried for their worldly welfare. He made many roads and dug big tanks.

২৬. তোমরা কাজী নজরুল ইসলামের নাম নিশ্চয়ই শুনিয়াছ। তিনি একজন খ্যাতনামা কবি। বাংলা সাহিত্যে তাঁহার দান অতুলনীয়। তিনি জীবনের কবি, যৌবনের কবি। তিনি আমাদর প্রেরণার উৎস।

You must have heard the name of Kazi Nazrul Islam. He is a famous poet. His contribution to Bengali literature is incomparable. He is the poet of life and youth. He is the source of our inspiration.

২৭. বাংলাদেশ দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার একটি স্বাধীন দেশ। আয়তনের তুলনায় ইহার জনসংখ্যা অত্যন্ত বেশী। ফলে বিদেশ হইতে প্রতি বৎসর প্রচুর খাদ্যশস্য আমদানী করিতে হয়। খাদ্যশস্যের উৎপাদন বাড়াইতে না পারিলে দেশের কোন উন্নতি হইবে না। এই ব্যাপারে আমাদের সকলের চেষ্টা করা উচিত।

Bangladesh is an independent country of South Asia. Its population is very great in proportion to its area. As a result, a lot of food grains has to be imported from foreign countries every year. There will be no development for the country if the production of food-grains can not be increased. All of us should try in this respect.

২৮. নকলকরা ভাল নয়। নকল করাকে সবাই ঘৃণা করে। তবুও কিছু কিছু ছাত্র নকল করে । নকল করিয়া কেহ বড় হইতে পারে নাই । বড় হইতে হইলে চাই নিজের গুণ ।

Copying is not good. Everybody hates copying. Yet some students copy. None could become great by copying. One needs his own qualities to be great.

২৯. একদিন রাত্রে মুহাম্মদ মহসিন ঘুমাইতেছিলেন। তখন তাঁহার ঘরে এক চোর প্রবেশ করিল। শব্দ শুনিয়া তিনি জাগিয়া উঠিলেন এবং চোরকে ধরিয়া ফেলিলেন। চোর ভয়ে কাঁদিতে লাগিল। মুহসিন বলিলেন, “তুমি কি জান না যেচুরি করা পাপ?"

One night Muhammed Muhsin was sleeping. Then a thief entered his room. Hearing a sound he woke up and caught the thief red handed. The thief was trembling in fear. Muhsin said, "Do you not know that stealing is a great sin?'

৩০. মক্কা একটি প্রাচীন নগরী। সেখানে দুনিয়ার প্রথম মসজিদ তৈরি হইয়াছিল। ইহাই সকলের পরিচিত কাবা মসজিদ। হযরত ইব্রাহীম (আঃ) ইহা তৈরি করেন। তারপর বহু দিন অতীত হইয়াছে। হঠাৎ মসজিদের দেওয়ালে একটি গর্ত দেখা গেল। অনতিবিলম্বে জেদ্দা হইতে কাঠ আনিয়া উহা মেরামত করা হয়।

Mecca is an ancient city. The first mosque of the world was built there. It is known to all as the Kaba Mosque. Hazrat Ibrahim (As) built it. Since then many days have passed. Suddenly a hole was found in the wall of the mosque. Without any delay wood was brought from Jeddah and it was repaired.

৩১. মানুষ একা বাঁচিতে পারে না। তাই সে সঙ্গী চায়। অন্যের সাহায্য ছাড়া সে একদিনও বাঁচিতে পারে না। এই জন্যই অন্যের সঙ্গে মিলিয়া মিশিয়া সে একত্রে বসবাস করে। এইভাবে সমাজ গঠিত হয়।

Man can not live alone. So he wants company. He can not live even a single day without the help of others. For this, he lives together with others. Thus the society is formed.
